From pouches and accessories, depending on what you get and what it's going to be used for, saddle hunting accessories are super important to mobile hunting. From one sticking, to comfort, or just normal saddle hunting, we discuss what accessories will work.

Before we explore the world of saddle hunting accessories, here are some questions you should ask yourself.

  • Will these certain accessories help me be efficient?
  • Am I wanting high quality or something that doesn't break the bank?
  • Do I want to be a minimalist or want all the extra gear I can carry?
  • What are the main saddle hunting accessories I need?

How Quality Saddle Hunting Accessories Can Help You

High quality saddle hunting accessories are pretty important when it comes to being efficient and a frustration free experience. I'm sure a lot of us has experienced a poorly designed hunting pack, pouch, or a piece of gear that had too many trinkets and straps that just causes frustration.

The name of the game is purchasing what you need, making sure you purchase from a company that is reputable, so you can actually hunt and not worry about stupid shit.

When first starting out, a lot of people (Including myself) purchases a ton of unnecessary saddle hunting accessories with low quality to save money, and in the end be more confused and frustrated.

Starting first, what saddle hunting accessories do you absolutely need? There is a very clear line when you go from the gear you need to the gear you want just for backup. Let's talk about the stuff you absolutely will need when hunting with a saddle. Now remember, what are you trying to achieve? Whatever your goals are, the stuff you need may vary from this list. Thats why it is important to determine what style of mobile hunting you want to do and then go from there. This list down below will be for the people that want to run a basic saddle hunting setup without caring to much about the extra gadgets.

  • Pouches: To carry your tree tether, lineman rope, and other gear
  • Knee Pads: To provide comfort when kneeling against the tree when saddle hunting
  • Suspenders: To ensure your saddle doesn't sag
  • Gear Strap: To hang your bow and gear from
  • Comfort/Saddle Back Band: Aids you in comfort when using a pleated saddle or a single panel saddle

The Main Type of Saddle Hunting Accessories

There are saddle hunting accessories that you will 100% need. We will breakdown what you'll need and what purpose they serve. Assuming you have basic hunting equipment from a previous style of hunting such as a pack, bow rope, etc. Here is a quick list of what you'll need when saddle hunting.

  • Pouches
  • Knee Pads
  • Gear Strap

Pouches - When it comes to saddle hunting, you'll need to carry various types of ropes with you and have them easily accessible. You'll want to have 2 pouches on your hunting saddle at the bare minimum to carry your lineman rope and tree tether. You need these pouches to be able to correctly get up and down the tree when saddle hunting properly.

Knee Pads - Knee pads or some sort of cushion between you and the tree when you are set up at hunting height is absolutely critical. This will enable you to actually sit down in your saddle and rest your knees against the tree.

Gear Strap - You'll need a gear strap that wraps around the tree so you can hang your bow and gear. Since you are more than likely hunting public land, you won't be able to screw bow holders and other stuff into the tree. So, you are incapable of hanging your bow and pack onto the tree without some sort of strap.

Optional Saddle Hunting Accessories we Recommend

These types of saddle hunting accessories are not critical to actually hunt with but can make your experience that much better. These accessories typically provide better comfort and experience when you are going deep into the woods or planning on pulling an all-day sit. The gear down below is pretty important if you want to more comfort, confidence, and a frustration free experience.

  • Saddle Suspenders
  • Back Band

Hunting Saddle Suspenders - Suspenders are very beneficial when it comes to making sure your hunting saddle is secure around your body. They distribute the entire weight load around your shoulders, ensuring your saddle to never creep down when walking and makes the saddle system feel more even. This is especially crucial if you plan to one stick hunt, as you typically carry 40 feet of rope in a pouch on one side of your saddle.

Comfort Back Band - A back band is an individual panel that can be placed around your back and hooked up to your carabiner to provide more comfort. The way it works is when you have it around your back, you can recline yourself as it will support your weight. This provides an even more weight distribution as it allows to transfer some of your own body weight to this band. It is completely independent from your saddle, as you can store it away and use it at any time as you, please. Also, it can be adjusted and placed anywhere on your lower of upper back, so you can dial in what is comfortable to you.

Best Pouches

Best pouches for mobile hunting and for saddle hunting accessories are going to be the S.A.M Pouch and the BullPak Zip Pouch. The best part, these both come with a lifetime warranty, as a commitment from us and our USA manufacturing ability.

Gear Straps and Knee Pads

These items are extremely crucial, or you won't really be able to saddle hunt.

A gear strap is a saddle hunting accessory that allows you to hang your gear up in a tree with you effectively. It also doesn't breach any laws as you do not damage the tree in any way. The reason this gear is crucial is because you'll need to hang your bow and other equipment you bring to saddle hunt. It is not a viable option to just hold everything while hunting.

Knee pads are another gear piece you will want. Knee pads allow you to sit down in a resting position with your knees against the tree. Without knee pads, you would have a very uncomfortable time. There are other knee pad saddle hunting accessories that aren't just wearable pads. I would just get the ones you can wear; it's one less thing to worry about and not having to take out of your pack and setup.

You can find gear straps and knee pads anywhere. I've used carpenter knee pads you can pick up at Home Depot for $20 that work pretty well.

For a gear strap, I would get the HYS Strap from Tethrd.

Best Comfort Saddle Hunting Accessories

Comfort saddle hunting accessories are not critical for you to hunt, but it helps a ton with comfortability. These gear pieces are literally created to aid comfort in some way, shape, or fashion. Two of the most popular comfort-based saddle hunting accessories are going to be a back band and saddle hunting suspenders.

A back band is an independent small single panel designed to deploy whenever you want to kick back and relax while hunting from a tree saddle. Typically, the back band is rolled up and stored in a pouch or a hunting pack and can be deployed whenever you feel like your back or hips are starting to get tired. Since it is an independent piece of equipment from your actual hunting saddle, it can be moved and adjusted at your own will anywhere your body.

Saddle Suspenders are another piece of gear I can't hunt without. These act just like normal suspenders for your jeans, to keep your saddle up and prevent it from sagging. This is super helpful if you have ever experienced walking in deep onto public land and constantly had to pull your saddle up and tighten your belt every 100 yards.
