To master the art of one stick saddle hunting, you'll need to invest in the right gear. While the setup is relatively simple, it's crucial to choose high-quality, reliable equipment that can keep you safe and effective in the field. Here are the main pieces of gear you will need to get into one sticking.

Budget Option:

The Budget option is assuming you already own a stick and platform from a previous saddle hunting method you utilized beforehand

Premium Option:

Setting up for one stick saddle hunting

Once you've gathered the essential gear, it's time to start setting up your one stick saddle hunting system. This process may seem daunting at first, but with practice, it will become second nature. Always remember to practice your setup on ground level before going all the way up.

Simply walk up to the tree you are going to practice with and set up your one stick or climbing stick onto the tree. Climb up the stick after that. After this, break out your climbing rope and belay device that should be in your Bull Pak. Attach the system to the tree above your head and clip in onto your saddle bridge.

Once you are attached, lean back and grab your climbing stick while you are suspended from the tree connected to your rope with your saddle bridge.

Once you grab your stick, place it in front of your chest and reattach it to the tree. Simply climb up the stick. Once you are back on top of your stick, make sure to move your rope that's wrapped around the tree upwards above your head again. Repeat this same process until you are at the height you want to hunt from.

When you reach the desired height, it's time to set up your platform. Set up your platform like you would traditionally while saddle hunting. And BOOM! You just one sticked. If you have a one stick, you don't need to set up an independent platform.

Once you are finished, pack up all your gear and get ready to rappel out of the tree. It is important you know how to use the belay device you chose before actually doing this step. Before you rappel, make sure to clip your Dyna glide or bow rope to the delta link on your rope. Once you completely rappel out of the tree without leaving any gear behind, use your Dyna glide that is attached to your delta link, and pull your climbing rope off the tree. What this does, it relives the tension of the climbing rope so it can free fall back to the ground for you to retrieve.

Safety tips for one stick saddle hunting

One stick saddle hunting may be an exhilarating and liberating experience, but it's also important to prioritize safety at all times. This unique hunting technique comes with its own set of risks, and it's crucial to be aware of them and take the necessary precautions to protect yourself.

First and foremost, here is a checklist to make sure you are safe while doing any climbing.

  • Checking all stitching and wear points on your saddle.
  • Checking nuts and bolts to make sure they are tight on sticks and platforms
  • Making sure your gear is still within the manufacture date spec from original purchase
  • Belay device is clean and in good shape
  • Making sure rope is not dirty, frayed, or worn down
  • Making sure you are physically capable (You should be fit and strong)
  • Having a knife to make sure you can cut yourself out of a sticky situation

It is vital to make sure you cultivate the discipline to regularly check your gear every time you hunt and to be physically in shape. It's not a joke when it comes to safety. With any climbing method, you put your life at risk and the potential of dying is greatly exacerbated.

Here is a blog post to check the stress points on your saddle.

Common mistakes to avoid in one stick saddle hunting

As with any specialized hunting technique, one stick saddle hunting comes with its own set of common mistakes that can undermine your success and put your safety at risk. By being aware of these pitfalls and taking steps to avoid them, you can maximize your chances of a successful and enjoyable hunting experience.

One of the most common mistakes made by one stick saddle hunters is failing to properly secure their equipment. This can include everything from a loose climbing stick, no back up knot on your belay device at your hunting height, to a poorly adjusted saddle. Ensure that all of your gear is properly secured and inspected before each hunt and be vigilant in monitoring its condition throughout the day.

Another common mistake is underestimating the physical demands of one stick saddle hunting. This technique requires a significant amount of core strength and endurance, as you'll be relying on your arms and core to support your weight while in the tree. Neglecting to properly train and condition your body can lead to fatigue, muscle strain, and other physical issues that can compromise your hunting performance and could lead you to a very bad situation.

Finally, many one stick saddle hunters make the mistake of not thoroughly scouting their hunting area before setting up. Failing to identify the best trees, potential obstacles, and ideal shooting lanes can severely limit your effectiveness and leave you struggling to find the perfect spot. Take the time to thoroughly scout your hunting area and be prepared to adjust your setup as needed to accommodate changing conditions or the behavior of your target prey.

Conclusion

One stick saddle hunting is a unique and exhilarating hunting technique that offers a range of advantages over traditional mobile hunting. With its unparalleled mobility, lightweight setup, and the ability to access virtually any tree, this method can take your hunting skills to new heights.

However, mastering the art of one stick saddle hunting requires a significant investment of time, effort, and the right equipment. By following the guidance provided in this comprehensive guide, you'll be well on your way to becoming an effective and confident one stick saddle hunter.

Remember, safety should always be your top priority when engaging in this type of hunting. Properly securing your gear, maintaining your physical fitness, and thoroughly scouting your hunting area are all essential steps to ensuring a safe and successful hunt.
